Morgan tried mind probing the Julian doppleganger. It melted rather dramatically. I hate it when that happens. I suppose it was too much to hope that Brand left someone behind that we could obtain useful information from. I was summoned to see Random, along with Jacob, Bartholomew and Nicholas. My three favorite people, all in one place. The only one missing was Raphael. Random wants us to go after Brand. Just us four. I am not making this up. He's got to be kidding. Merlin wasn't able to defeat Brand, and he had Ghostwheel and a Spikard backing him up. What does he expect us to do? Maybe the others feel they must engage in this foolhardy mission, but I'm under no such obligation. I owe Random no allegiance. And it seems I've done quite enough for Amber as it is. Nicholas and I discussed Edward for a time. My spell still hasn't located him. I'm beginning to doubt it ever will. Interestingly enough, the fact that the spell was in existence before the sorceress defenses were reestablished seems to have given me a opening through them. It would appear to be in my best interests to keep the spell going for now. After all, since shadow is infinite, it will keep going forever if left alone. Unfortunately, it doesn't bring me any closer to finding Edward. Why am I so set on finding him, anyway? I'm not sure. Certainly having a Trump artist owe you a favor is no small thing. Plus, someone may have taken Edward out as a precursor to some sort of attack. In which case, it would seem prudent to find him. I was in the process of Trumping Etienne to ask about the last time he saw Edward, when Nicholas pulled him through. It seems Random has hired him for the Brand mission. I hope he got a lot for it. Everyone seems to assume that I'll be participating as well. Why should I? Because Random asked me to? I've sworn no oath of loyalty to him. Nor will I. My loyalties lie with my house, not with Dworkin's misbegotten nation. Even if some part of my blood comes from it. Etienne suggested it would be useful if we could track Brand when he Trumps from one point to another. If anyone could do that, Edward could. I tried to use this to persuade the others to help me find him, with no success. Instead they're focusing on having Jacob draw Trumps of Brand's allies. As if attacking Brand wasn't bad enough, they want to take on the other two as well? I think they're crazy. Etienne attempted to make psychic contact with Jacob, and got knocked back several feet. There were no problems when Jacob initiated the contact. I wonder if that happens every time someone Trumps Jacob? Must be a bit of a pain. Definitely something to remember. Nicholas can somehow empower arrows with Logrus energy. He empowered several for the Brand-hunting gang. Neat trick. I wonder how he does it? More importantly, I wonder if it's something I can learn? Obviously, I won't learn it from him. If Brand destroyed that entire lot, the only one I'd miss is Etienne. Etienne Trumped Dworkin, and vanished. I tried Trumping him, but I only reached a shadow. It was most odd. This shadow didn't recognize me and denied he was from Chaos. I'd say it was a pretty bad duplicate. Etienne returned shortly afterwards, looking rather chewed on. I would surmise that Trumping Dworkin is an unwise thing to do. As is Trumping Bleys, from the sound of it. Apparently Raphael did so, and hasn't been heard from since. Can't say I feel badly for him. Etienne actually wanted to go through to Bleys anyway. Sometimes I wonder if he's completely over his Logrus madness. It became obvious after a while that much was being said, and not much was being done. Hardly a surprise. It doesn't help that the group has no leader. Not that Amberites seem willing to follow anyone but themselves anyway. So they waste all sorts of time trying to convince each other that their plan is the best. Or, like Bartholomew, they go off and do their own thing. I'm glad I'm not going with them. I believe they're doomed to failure. Brand took out most of the older Amberites in his first attack. What chance do their children have? I think my energies will be best put towards locating Edward. I plan to examine the site where he disappeared in hopes of finding some clues to his whereabouts. No luck. There might have been some useful information here, but it's been too long. Damn. I'm running out of options. If I had some idea of where to start... Edward's room was unlocked, so I searched it. I knew it was a long shot that I'd find anything useful, but I was running out of ideas. I found a number of Trumps, including an unfinished one of Suhuy, but nothing useful. Maybe I should talk to Suhuy. It appears that he knew Edward, and maybe he'd be willing to help find him. Or at least point me in the right direction.
