In answer to the question, "How easily does Damascus Steel rust?", the Ring of Steel presents the following answer:
Rusts like crazy, but differentially as different carbon-content layers do oxidize at disparate rates. Oil - heavy weight oil (80-120) for long term, light weight old like Marvel Mystery for short term. You can wax it (after removing all oxidation and then removing any oil used to remove the oxidation, but his only works well for blades that are not used - do not store blade in a leather scabbard - the acids used in tanning the leather will discolor and etch the blade.
